About me

Hello I am Ashley Farrugia, I am currently a PhD student at the University of Liverpool in the Computer Science Department under the supervision of Prof. Leszek A. Gąsieniec and Dr. Russell Martin. I have a number of research interests, however my PhD is focussed upon applying algorithmic techniques within modern mobile devices to improve the efficiency of driving.

Education and Employment

I have a typical academic background, after completing my GCSE's at St Aelreds High School, I decided to enrol on a "National Diploma: IT Practitioners (ICT Systems Support)" at Warrington Collegiate. From there I wanted to learn more about the theoretical side of computing, so I started a undergraduate degree at Edge Hill University in Computing (Software and System). After achieving a 1st class degree, I decided to pursue a career in software development at Traveljigsaw Ltd as a graduate Java Developer. 18 months later I decided I wanted a change of scenery, so I moved to Satellite Information Services Ltd (SIS) in media city (manchester) for a short period, before being accepted for a Centre for Global Eco-Innovation (CGE) funded PhD.

The nature of my funding is Ecological Research and Development (R&D), that is, research that involves an interdisciplinary partnership between both academia and industry to solve key industrial challenges that have an impact on energy conservation. In particular my research interests are vehicular traffic, more specifically I focus on (1) pattern recognition mechanisms, (2) prediction methods and (3) optimisation in vehicular traffic and mobility in general.

As part of my funding I conduct research at AIMES GRID SERVICES, working on a variety of R&D projects including i-MOVE, i-TRACS and i-PORT.
