Model-Based Methods for supporting field service engineers in a flexible manufacturing context (the "stoves" project)
(December 1999 to January 2003)

1. SUMMARY

The "stoves" research project was funded as part of the DTI Foresight LINK programme. The research addressed the problems faced by suppliers of flexible or customised product ranges, in providing post-supply service and maintenance.

The research issues involved included the architecture of the modelling environment, the description of the data structures to support dynamic generation, and the integration of textual and model-based information within a single framework. The approach was prototyped using two very different exemplars of flexible manufacturing, with the aim of defining a generic system. The delivery system was implemented via the World Wide Web. The research targeted the foresight priorities of Information Technology, Electronics and Communications; Manufacturing, Production and Business Processes; and Retail and Distribution.
