Academic politics:

British universities currently face many problems, including:

• the short-sighted rejection of higher education as a public good funded by the taxpayer (see the webpage of the Campaign for the Public University)
• general lack of funding

The Danger of Assessing Research by Economic Impact is a web page that I prepared earlier, highlighting an additional problem - the tendency to assess academic research in terms of "economic impact" rather than in terms of quality. I am most concerned about this issue in the context of the upcoming REF.
