University of Liverpool -- A*STAR Dual PhD Project

The position can be started as soon as possible. We will consider applications until the position is filled.

A fully funded 4-year PhD position is available as a joint program between the Department of Computer Science of the University of Liverpool (UoL), UK, and the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) at A*Star, Singapore. The CS department at UoL is a world-leading research centre with strengths in robotics and intelligent systems, automated verification, algorithms and optimization, and computational economics. The I2R is Singapore’s largest ICT research institute, known for its excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Communications & Networks, Cybersecurity, Healthcare, Robotics & AV, Satellite, Smart Energy & Environment and Video & Image Analytics. The successful candidate will conduct research in the areas of verification and robotics. He/She will be co-supervised by researchers from the areas of Automated Verification ( Dr Xiaowei Huang , UoL), Humanoid Robots and DL-based Computer Vision ( Dr Wei-Yun Yau , A*STAR).

This project aims to tackle the challenge of enabling AI-driven robots to self-explain their behaviour in a human-understandable way. In the area of AI, explainability (or interpretability) has become a major research focus, due to the advances of deep learning (DL). In safety critical applications, the robots can be deployed, and trusted, only when they can be understood by the human co-workers. This project will develop novel techniques to enable DL-based computer vision systems to explain its decisions and develop self-explanation techniques for robots whose decision making is based on both the logic-based motion planning (which has well-founded self-explanation approaches) and the DL-based robotic perception.

The project will train the student with a set of skills spanning from logic-based approaches on deep neural networks, DL-based computer vision systems, to building real-world robots. The student will spend the 1st and the 4th year at UoL, and the 2nd and 3rd years at I2R@A*STAR. The position is fully-funded. When the student is at Liverpool, the UoL will pay both tuition fees (£4,260 for Home/EU student) and stipend (£14,777 per year for Home/EU student). The same level of funding can be used for international student. A*Star will do the similar when the student is in Singapore.
