Abstract
The potential of mobile information visualization is widely recognized but there are still relatively few actual mobile visualization interfaces or even proper guidelines for the design of mobile information visualization interfaces. We look to address this issue by considering a basic set of interactions and relating these to mobile device limitations and capabilities. Our analysis suggests that inventive use of existing information visualization techniques can overcome many device limitations and that interaction and animated view transitions are key to effective mobile information visualization. In this talk we will demonstrate our findings using case studies looking at a coordinated map and scatter-plot views for multidimensional data, an animated space filling layout for hierarchical data, and a mobile map with fisheye distortion for hands-free navigation.
