Changes to the department's linux printing system (Feb 2013) - please read

KJC

The Computer Science Department is introducing the Follow-You print service to run in parallel (for the moment at least) with the department's existing printing service. Difficulty in sourcing toner cartridges for HP LaserJets will mean that the department's own printing service will cease once the toner supply has been exhausted.

New Ricoh MFP printers have been installed in strategic locations throughout the Ashton and Holt Buildings. The MFP printers
* are A4, duplex and colour capable (several also support A3)
* support copying and stapling facilities and
* support the Scan-To-Me feature.

Setting up Follow-You on Computer Science Linux systems

I have setup the RICOH-PS print queue on most of the staff and PhD Linux systems. RICOH-PS points at the CSD Postscript queue
smb://print1.livad.liv.ac.uk/PostScript-StaffQueueNorth. In order to use the printer, you need to set up your CSD username/password credentials for the print queue.

Note that the instructions that follow have been tested on the GNOME desktop, your mileage will vary for different desktops.

1. You will have previously saved the attached PostScript file circtext.ps from my email (though any PostScript file will do). From a terminal, issue the command ...

lpr -P RICOH-PS circtext.ps

2. After a moment, you should see an Authentication window pop up similar to Fig 1.

Fig 1

3. You now need to supply your CSD credentials. In the Username field enter your CSD username prepended with livad\ (CSD's domain name) ; so, for instance, my CSD username happens to be kjc, so I would enter livad\kjc. Enter your CSD password in the Password field and tick on Remember password as in Fig 2.

Fig 2

By ticking the Remember password field the system will remember your CSD username/password credentials each time you print. If you change your CSD password, the system will pop up the Authentication window again the next time you print.

4. Sometimes when you tick the Remember password field (and I'm not too sure when this is triggered) you may see the Create Default Keyring window pop up as in Fig 3.

Fig 3

If this happens I would use your CS password - its something to do with GNOME.

Releasing your print jobs at the Rocoh printer

There are printers located on each floor of the Ashton Building. To release your jobs sent to the RICOH-PS printer queue, please read the following document ricoh_instructions.pdf BUT please note that due to a limitation of the smb print protocol, ALL your jobs will appear as Remote Downlevel Document instead of the actual document name - we are investigating this.
