BCTCS - AGM Minutes (1996)
Minutes of the General Meeting of the BCTCS, 1996
The meeting was held on Tuesday 2nd April at the University of Kent at Canterbury
-
Alan Gibbons (Warwick) presented the Chairman's report.
-
It was reported that as a result of the profit made from BCTCS11 at Swansea,
there was now a balance of approximately 3000 pounds in the BCTCS account.
A brief discussion took place concerning how this might be best used. One
possibility that emerged being to use some of this to defray part of the expenses
of non-EPSRC funded research students, who are not eligible to receive such
support via EPSRC.
-
Election of Treasurer: Chris Tofts (Leeds) (proposed: Paul Dunne; seconded: Julian Bradfield)
was the only candidate put forward and was elected to the position of Treasurer (nem. con.).
-
The meeting passed a formal vote of thanks to Iain Stewart in recognition of his work in
consolidating the accounts for BCTCS.
-
Subscriptions to E.A.T.C.S: Simon Thompson (UKC) reported on the difficulties that the
recent increase in EATCS subscription rates had created, one consequence of which was that
the full registration fee for the meeting had risen above 200 pounds. It was agreed that
the practice of continuing to use part of the registration fee to cover EATCS subscription
should be continued. The possibility of negotiating with EATCS to see if a reduced rate
could be agreed for a guaranteed block of subscriptions each year was raised
and will be investigated.
-
Chris Tofts reported on the position regarding BCTCS World Wide Web pages.
Minutes of the Organising Committee Meeting, 3rd April 1996
Present: Alan Gibbons (Chair, Liverpool); Paul Dunne (Secretary, Liverpool);
Chris Tofts (Treasurer, Leeds); John Stell (Keele); Julian Bradfield (Edinburgh);
Simon Thompson (Local organiser: UKC)
-
It was agreed that a draft formal constitution for the BCTCS be prepared for discussion
at BCTCS13 at Sheffield in 1997. It was noted that it will be necessary to have something
of this nature if, for example, any serious attempts are to be made to have the
colloquium accorded charitable status. Alan Gibbons and Paul Dunne agreed to undertake
the initial drafting of this and will liaise with the other members of the committee
prior to putting this to the General Meeting in 1997.
-
Choice of Host site for BCTCS14 in 1998: Simon Thompson reported that, subject to final confirmation (locally),
the University of St. Andrews have agreed to act as the host site for BCTCS14 in 1998.
-
The was a brief discussion of possible invited speakers to approach for BCTCS13. In the course
of this, it was recognised that it would be useful to have a definitive list of previous
invited speakers produced. Paul Dunne agreed to investigate constructing such a list
and to forward information concerning suggested speakers to Mike Holcombe (Local organiser, Sheffield).
