Information for PhD Students

Seminars and Postgraduate Workshop

It is important to supplement your own research activity by attending presentations by other academics and PhD students, which will give you a broader perspective on computer science research.

The Postgraduate Workshop

All PhD and MPhil students are expected to attend the the Postgraduate Workshop, where second-year PhD students give talks for a general CS audience. Your IPAP members will provide feedback on the talk. Lunch is usually provided, so this will also give you a chance to interact with other PhD students and staff. All PhD students must attend (this is needed in order to fulfil the `training' part of your PhD). Attendance will be taken.

• 2022 PhD Workshop was held on Tuesday 3rd May 2022.
• 2021 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th May 2021, via Zoom
• 2020 PhD Workshop was due to be held over two days in April/May 2020. Due to the Covid situation, this event did not take place.
• 2019 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd May 2019.
• 2018 PhD Workshop was held on Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd May 2018.
• 2017 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th May 2017.
• 2016 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th May 2016.
• 2015 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th May 2015.
• 2014 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 30th April 2014.
• 2013 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 1st May 2013.
• 2012 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 2nd May 2012.
• 2011 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 6th April 2011.
• 2010 PhD Workshop was held on Wednesday 24th March 2010.

Attendance at the Postgraduate workshop is compulsary for PhD/MPhil students. This is required for the training portion of your PhD, which you need to complete in order to progress and/or to submit your thesis.

Seminars

Additionally to broaden your knowledge you should attend the following.

• The Computer Science Seminars
• Research Group Seminars. Many research groups hold seminars with talks from staff members, research students and visitors. See the webpage of your research group.

Attendance at Departmental Seminars is strongly encouraged and helps inform your research, keep up to date with current research in Computer Science and make conatct with leading researchers. Please contact the seminar organiser if you have suggestions of seminar speakers.

You are also encouraged to attend research seminars in EEE and other parts of the University.
